Our History
IAPTS, Inc. (Improved Academic Performance Through Sports) was established in 2022 as a Maryland-based nonprofit organization, officially earning its 501(c)(3) status in 2024.
From the beginning, our mission has been clear: to help young people excel both academically and athletically, unlocking opportunities for higher education.
The Power of Sports and Education
Addressing Barriers to Participation
Our Vision for Maryland Students
Collaboration and Growth
Our work is grounded in the belief that participation in sports can enhance academic performance. Research supports this connection, as Nicole Cooper Franklin of Claremont McKenna College notes:
“Sports may help students build discipline, set goals, organize time, and develop self-confidence. Once athletes learn to transfer these skills to academics, they can further their success inside the classroom.”
By leveraging these benefits, IAPTS empowers students to thrive in both arenas.
We understand that not every student can easily access sports opportunities. Limited team spots in schools and challenges such as below-average academic performance or behavioral issues often prevent participation. To bridge these gaps, IAPTS works with:
-
Students in community center sports programs
-
Students striving to rejoin school teams by offering mentoring, tutoring, and advocacy
-
Athletes needing support through scholarships, sporting equipment, and college counseling
Our programs ensure students succeed, no matter their starting point.
In Montgomery County and Prince George’s County, IAPTS focuses on partnering with high schools to select and support students in various sports. By the end of each year, eligible students can apply for college scholarships, demonstrating their commitment through:
-
Completing an application
-
Writing a compelling essay
-
Securing references
We aim to create lasting change in students’ lives, building their futures through education and athletics.
To achieve our goals, IAPTS invites teachers, mentors, and like-minded organizations to join us in creating opportunities for Maryland’s youth. Together, we’re investing in a brighter, more successful future for student-athletes across the state.
